HIGHER THAN THE HEAVENS

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord.  "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts."--Isaiah 55:8-9

They reasoned that it was not in accordance with the character of God to save Noah and his family, eight persons only, in the vast world, and yet all the rest be swept out of existence by the waters of the flood.  Oh, no.  There were great men and good men on the earth.  If they did not believe as Noah did, Noah was deceived....

As they reasoned in Noah's day, they reason today, when the warning message is proclaimed to fear God and keep His commandments, for the wrath of God is soon to fall on all the sinful and disobedient, and they will perish in the general conflagration.  Professed servants of Christ who are unfaithful, who do not reverence God and with fear prepare for the terrible future event, will lull themselves to carnal security with their fallacious reasoning, as they did in Noah's day.

God is too good and too merciful to save just a few who keep the Sabbath and believe the message of warning.  The great men and the good men, the philosophers and men of wisdom would see the Sabbath and the shortness of time, if it were true.  They did not believe a merciful God who made men would consume them with fire because they did not believe the warnings given.  This, they reason, is not in accordance with God....

God's love is represented in our day as being of such a character as would forbid His destroying the sinner.  Men reason from their own low standard of right and justice.  "Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself." Psalm 50:21.  They measure God by themselves.  They reason as to how they would act under the circumstances and decide God would do as they imagine they would do. (Manuscript 5, 1876)

REFLECTION:  There is danger that men will receive the counsel of men, when by so doing they will discard the counsel of God.  Oh, what lessons all must learn before they will understand that God seeth not as man seeth. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, 146)

AS IT WAS IN THE DAYS OF NOAH

As in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark.--Matthew 24:38

Because of his holy integrity and unwavering adherence to God's commands, [Noah] was counted singular indeed and made himself an object of contempt and derision by answering to the claims of God without a questioning doubt.  What a contrast to the prevailing unbelief and universal disregard of His law!

Noah was tested and tried thoroughly, and yet he preserved his integrity in the face of the world--all, all against him.  Thus will it be when the Son of man shall be revealed.  The saved will be few, as is represented by Noah and his family.  The world might have believed the warnings, God's Spirit was striving with them to lead them to faith and obedience, but their own wicked hearts turned aside the counsel of God and resisted the pleadings of infinite love.  They continued their empty ways as usual, eating, drinking, planting, and building, up to the very day Noah entered into the ark....

The class who professed to acknowledge God were the ones who took the lead in rejecting the preaching of Noah and through their influence leading others to reject it.

To everyone comes the time of test and trial....

The men before the flood sought to quiet their consciences that the Spirit of God had aroused by arguing how impossible it was for the message of Noah to be true and a flood to deluge the world, which would turn nature out of her course.

The same reasoning is heard today.  "Why, the world will not be destroyed by fire."  The siren song is sung, " 'All things continue as they were from the beginning.'  No need to pay any regard to this preaching that the world's history will soon close.  Why, the laws of nature show the inconsistency of this." [2 Peter 3:3, 4.]  He who is Lord of nature can employ it to serve His purpose, for He is not the slave of nature. (Manuscript 5, 1876)

REFLECTION:  How foolish it is for humans to decide what is possible for God to do, or not.  God's Word was, is, and always will be truth.  We would do well to believe every word and take it to heart.

HEED THE WARNINGS

They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but shall not find it.--Amos 8:12

We are in the investigative judgment.  Soon judgment will be pronounced on our works and our actions which are passing in review before God.  A solemn, awful period!  Who realize this great work?  I saw that those who do not now appreciate, study, and dearly prize the Word of God, spoken by His servants, will have cause to mourn bitterly hereafter....

The Lord in judgment will, at the close of time, walk through the earth; the fearful plagues will begin to fall.  Then those who have despised God's Word, those who have lightly esteemed it, shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord and shall not find it.  A famine is in the land for hearing the Word.  The ministers of God will have done their last work, offered their last prayers, shed their last bitter tear for a rebellious church and an ungodly people.  Their last solemn warning has been given.

O then how quickly would houses and lands, dollars that have been miserly hoarded and cherished and tightly grasped, be given for some consolation by those who have professed the truth and have not lived it out, for the way of salvation to be explained or to hear a hopeful word, or a prayer, or an exhortation from their ministers.

But no, they must hunger and thirst on in vain; their thirst will never be quenched, no consolation can they get; their cases are decided and eternally fixed.  It is a fearful, awful time.  There can much be done now to bring in those jewels who are hid beneath the rubbish, who will highly prize the truth as it falls from the lips of God's servants. (Manuscript 1, June 1857)

REFLECTION:  We all have been given time to answer the pleadings of our Saviour to return to Him.  We have seen His great sacrifice and love.  His signs have been clear.  It is time to give Christ our hearts and ask Him to take control of our lives so we can finish the work and spend eternity with our Saviour.

ETERNAL LIFE OR ETERNAL DEATH

If it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.  But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."--Joshua 24:15

Said the angel, "Satan is the root, his children are the branches.  They are now consumed root and branch.  They have died an everlasting death.  They are never to have a resurrection, and God will have a clean universe."  I then looked and saw the fire which had consumed the wicked, burning up the rubbish and purifying the earth.  Again I looked and saw the earth purified.  There was not a single sign of the curse.  The broken, uneven surface of the earth now looked like a level, extensive plain.  God's entire universe was clean, and the great controversy was forever ended.

Wherever we looked, everything upon which the eye rested was beautiful and holy.  And all the redeemed host, old and young, great and small, cast their glittering crowns at the feet of their Redeemer, and prostrated themselves in adoration before Him, and worshiped Him that liveth forever and ever.  The beautiful new earth, with all its glory, was the eternal inheritance of the saints.  The kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, was then given to the saints of the Most High, who were to possess it forever, even forever and ever. (Early Writings, 295)

REFLECTION:  We need to seek for a true understanding of how to train our children for the future life.  At this time when wickedness is constantly increasing, we can not afford to be careless or negligent.  Our children are God's property.  Shall we let them depart from the paths of righteousness, and make no effort to save them?  They have eternal life to win; eternal death to shun; and it is ours to help them to choose the good and resist the evil.  When they learn to welcome the spirit of Christ into their hearts, the salvation of God will be seen in their lives. DON'T BE OUTSIDE THE CITY

Then I, John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.--Revelation 21:2

Satan succeeds in deceiving them, and all immediately begin to prepare themselves for battle.  There are many skillful men in that vast army, and they construct all kinds of implements of war.  Then with Satan at their head, the multitude move on.  Kings and warriors follow close after Satan, and the multitude follow after in companies.  Each company has its leader, and order is observed as they march over the broken surface of the earth to the Holy City.

Jesus closes the gates of the city, and this vast army surround it, and place themselves in battle array, expecting a fierce conflict.  Jesus and all the angelic host and all the saints, with the glittering crowns upon their heads, ascend to the top of the wall of the city.  Jesus speaks with majesty, saying, "Behold, ye sinners, the reward of the just!  And behold, My redeemed, the reward of the wicked!"

The vast multitude behold the glorious company on the walls of the city.  And as they witness the splendor of their glittering crowns and see their faces radiant with glory, reflecting the image of Jesus, and then behold the unsurpassed glory and majesty of the King of kings and Lord of lords, their courage fails.

A sense of the treasure and glory which they have lost rushes upon them, and they realize that the wages of sin is death.  They see the holy, happy company whom they have despised, clothed with glory, honor, immortality, and eternal life, while they are outside the city with every mean and abominable thing. (Early Writings, 293-294)

REFLECTION:  The character we cultivate, the attitude we assume today, is fixing our future destiny.  We are all making a choice, either to be with the blessed, inside the city of light, or to be with the wicked, outside the city.  The principles which govern our actions on earth are known in heaven, and our deeds are faithfully chronicled in the book of record.  It is there known whether our characters are after the order of Christ or the order of the arch-deceiver who caused rebellion in heaven. SATAN'S LAST BATTLE

Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, God and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.--Revelation 20:7-8

Then Jesus and the holy angels, accompanied by all the saints, again go to the city, and the bitter lamentations and wailings of the doomed wicked fill the air.  Then I saw that Satan again commenced his work.  He passed around among his subjects, and made the weak and feeble strong, and told them that he and his angels were powerful.

He pointed to the countless millions who had been raised.  There were mighty warriors and kings who were well skilled in battle and who had conquered kingdoms.  And there were mighty giants and valiant men who had never lost a battle.  There was the proud, ambitious Napoleon, whose approach had caused kingdoms to tremble.  There stood men of lofty stature and dignified bearing, who had fallen in battle while thirsting to conquer.

As they come forth from their graves, they resume the current of their thoughts where it ceased in death.  They possess the same desire to conquer which ruled when they fell.  Satan consults with his angels, and then with those kings and conquerors and mighty men.  Then he looks over the vast army, and tells them that the company in the city is small and feeble, and that they can go up and take it, and cast out its inhabitants, and possess its riches and glory themselves. (Early Writings, 293)

REFLECTION:  [Satan] represents himself to his deluded subjects as a redeemer, assuring them that his power has brought them forth from their graves and that he is about to rescue them from the most cruel tyranny....He proposes to lead them against the camp of the saints and to take possession of the City of God.  With fiendish exultation he points to the unnumbered millions who have been raised from the dead and declares that as their leader he is well able to overthrow the city and regain his throne and his kingdom. (The Great Controversy, 663)

THE  THOUSAND YEARS COMPLETED

The rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished.--Revelation 20:5

Then Jesus and all the retinue of holy angels, and all the redeemed saints, left the city.  The angels surrounded their Commander and escorted Him on His way, and the train of redeemed saints followed.  Then, in terrible, fearful majesty, Jesus called forth the wicked dead; and they came up with the same feeble, sickly bodies that went into the grave.

What a spectacle! what a scene!  At the first resurrection all came forth in immortal bloom; but at the second the marks of the curse are visible on all.  The kings and noblemen of the earth, the mean and low, the learned and unlearned, come forth together.

All behold the son of man; and those very men who despised and mocked Him, who put the crown of thorns upon His brow, and smote Him with the reed, behold Him in all His kingly majesty.  Those who spit upon Him in the hour of His trial now turn from His piercing gaze and from the glory of His countenance.  Those who drove the nails through His hands and feet now look upon the marks of their cruelty on His body.  And they know that He is the very one whom they crucified and derided in His expiring agony.  And then there arises one long protracted wail of agony, as they flee to hide from the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords.

All are seeking to hide in the rocks, to shield themselves from the terrible glory of Him whom they once despised.  And, overwhelmed and pained with His majesty and exceeding glory, they with one accord raise their voices, and with terrible distinctness exclaim, "Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord!" (Early Writings, 292)

REFLECTION:  At the close of the thousand years the second resurrection will take place.  Then the wicked will be raised from the dead and appear before God for the execution of "the judgment written."  Thus the revelator, after describing the resurrection of the righteous, says: "The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished." Revelation 20:5. (The Great Controversy, 661)

EVEN UNWILLING LIPS CONFESS HIM

I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.--Isaiah 45:23

Christ's second coming will be in marked contrast to His first coming....He will be acknowledged by all as the King of glory.  At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  The angels will bow in adoration before Him.  His enemies will see the mistake they have made, and every tongue will confess His divinity. (The Signs of the Times, April 19, 1905)

At the close of the thousand years, Christ again returns to the earth.  He is accompanied by the host of the redeemed and attended by a retinue of angels.  As He descends in terrific majesty He bids the wicked dead arise to receive their doom.  They come forth, a mighty host, numberless as the sands of the sea.  What a contrast to those who were raised at the first resurrection!  The righteous were clothed with immortal youth and beauty.  The wicked bear the traces of disease and death.

Every eye in that vast multitude is turned to behold the glory of the Son of God.  With one voice the wicked hosts exclaim: "Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord!"  It is not love to Jesus that inspires this utterance.  The force of truth urges the words from unwilling lips.  As the wicked went into their graves, so they come forth with the same enmity to Christ and the same spirit of rebellion.  They are to have no new probation in which to remedy the defects of their past lives.  Nothing would be gained by this.  A lifetime of transgression has not softened their hearts.  A second probation, were it given them, would be occupied as was the first in evading the requirements of God and exciting rebellion against Him. (The Great Controversy, 662)

REFLECTION:  Men may think that they have succeeded in banishing from their minds all thought of God; but when they are brought face to face with the king of terrors, there is wrung from unwilling lips the confession that the boasts of a lifetime have been a delusion. (The Signs of the Times, August 3, 1904)

WHITE ROBES AND PALM BRANCHES

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands.--Revelation 7:9

Christ again appears to the view of His enemies.  Far above the city, upon a foundation of burnished gold, is a throne, high and lifted up.  Upon this throne sits the Son of God, and around Him are the subjects of His kingdom.  The power and majesty of Christ no language can describe, no pen portray.  The glory of the Eternal Father is enshrouding His Son.  The brightness of His presence fills the City of God, and flows out beyond the gates, flooding the whole earth with its radiance.

Nearest the throne are those who were once zealous in the cause of Satan, but who, plucked as brands from the burning, have followed their Saviour with deep, intense devotion.  Next are those who perfected Christian characters in the midst of falsehood and infidelity, those who honored the law of God when the Christian world declared it void, and the millions, of all ages, who were martyred for their faith.  And beyond is the "great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues,...before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands." Revelation 7:9.

Their warfare is ended, their victory won.  They have run the race and reached the prize.  The palm branch in their hands is a symbol of their triumph, the white robe an emblem of the spotless righteousness of Christ which now is theirs.

The redeemed raise a song of praise that echoes and re-echoes through the vaults of heaven: "Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb." Revelation 7:10. (The Great Controversy, 665)

REFLECTION:  Again and again have the encouraging words of angels renewed the drooping spirits of the faithful and, carrying their minds above the things of earth, caused them to behold by faith the white robes, the crowns, the palm branches of victory, which overcomers will receive when they surround the great white throne. (The Acts of the Apostles, 153)

WELCOME TO THE CITY OF GOD

He carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.--Revelation 21:10

Jesus opens wide the pearly gates, and the nations that have kept the truth enter in.  There they behold the Paradise of God, the home of Adam in his innocency.  Then that voice, richer than any music that ever fell on mortal ear, is heard, saying: "Your conflict is ended."  "Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."...

Oh, the wonders of redeeming love! the rapture of that hour when the infinite Father, looking upon the ransomed, shall behold His image, sin's discord banished, its blight removed, and the human once more in harmony with the divine!

As they gather about the great white throne, gladness unspeakable will fill their hearts, when they behold those whom they have won for Christ, and see that one has gained others, and these still others, all brought into the haven of rest, there to lay their crowns at Jesus' feet and praise Him through the endless cycles of eternity.

As the ransomed ones are welcomed to the City of God, there rings out upon the air an exultant cry of adoration.  The two Adams are about to meet.  The Son of God is standing with outstretched arms to receive the father of our race--the being whom He created, who sinned against his Maker, and for whose sin the marks of the crucifixion are borne upon the Saviour's form.  As Adam discerns the prints of the cruel nails, he does not fall upon the bosom of his Lord, but in humiliation casts himself at His feet, crying: "Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain!"  Tenderly the Saviour lifts him up and bids him look once more upon the Eden home from which he has so long been exiled. (The Great Controversy, 646-647)

REFLECTION:  The Holy City, the New Jerusalem, which is the capital and representative of the kingdom, is called "the bride, the Lamb's wife."  Said the angel to John: "Come hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb's wife."  "He carried me away in the spirit," says the prophet, "and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God." Revelation 21:9, 10. (The Great Controversy, 426-427)
