NO PLACE FOR IDLENESS

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.--Colossians 3:23

Some may say, "If the Lord is coming soon, what need is there to establish schools, sanitariums and food factories?  What need is there for our young people to learn trades?  It is the Lord's design that we shall constantly improve the talents He has given us.  We cannot do this unless we use them.  The prospect of Christ's soon coming should not lead us to idleness.  Instead, it should lead us to do all we possibly can to bless and benefit humanity.  No idler is guiltless in the Lord's sight.

Bible religion never makes men idlers. We believe that Christ's coming is near.  Then let every one make the most of his God-given time in seeking to prepare himself and others for this great event.  Teach the importance of life's duties to those who are wasting their opportunities. (Letter 25, February 5, 1902)

Jesus consents to bear our burdens only when we trust Him.  He is saying: "Come unto Me, all ye weary and heavy-laden; give Me your load; trust Me to do the work that is impossible for the human agent to do."  Let us trust Him.  Worry is blind and cannot discern the future.  But Jesus sees the end from the beginning, and in every difficulty He has His way prepared to bring relief.  Abiding in Christ, we can do all things through Him who strengthens us. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, 297-298)

REFLECTION:  You who are waiting in idle expectation that God will perform some wonderful miracle to enlighten the world in regard to the truth, I want to ask you if you have employed the means that God has provided for the advancement of His cause?  You who pray for light and truth from heaven, have you studied the Scriptures?  Have you desired "the sincere milk of the word," that you may grow thereby?  Have you submitted yourselves to the revealed command?  "Thou shalt," and "thou shalt not," are definite requirements, and there is no place for idleness in the Christian life....There is work, earnest work to be done for the Master.  The evils condemned in God's word, must be overcome. (The Review and Herald, July 17, 1888)

LONGING FOR LIGHT

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.--2 Timothy 2:15

The Lord has His representatives in all the churches.  These persons have not had the special testing truths for these last days presented to them under circumstances that brought conviction to heart and mind; therefore they have not, by rejecting light, severed their connection with God.  Many there are who have faithfully walked in the light that has shone upon their pathway.  They hunger to know more of the ways and works of God.  All over the world men and women are looking wistfully to heaven.  Prayers and tears and inquiries go up from souls longing for light, for grace, for the Holy Spirit.  Many are on the very verge of the kingdom, waiting only to be gathered in. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, 70-71)

It is true that we are commanded to "cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins." Isaiah 58:1.  This message must be given; but while it must be given, we should be careful not to thrust and crowd and condemn those who have not the light that we have.  We should not go out of our way to make hard thrusts at the Catholics.  Among the Catholics there are many who are most conscientious Christians and who walk in all the light that shines upon them, and God will work in their behalf.

Those who have had great privileges and opportunities, and who have failed to improve their physical, mental, and moral powers, but who have lived to please themselves and have refused to bear their responsibility, are in greater danger and in greater condemnation before God than those who are in error upon doctrinal points, yet who seek to live to do good to others.  Do not censure others; do not condemn them. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, 243)

REFLECTION:  In secret places the Word of God was thus brought forth and read, sometimes to a single soul, sometimes to a little company who were longing for light and truth.  Often the entire night was spent in this manner.  So great would be the wonder and admiration of the listeners that the messenger of mercy was not infrequently compelled to cease his reading until the understanding could grasp the tidings of salvation.  Often would words like these be uttered: "Will God indeed accept my offering?  Will he smile upon me?  Will he pardon me?"  The answer was read, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 (The Great Controversy, 74-75)

I HAVE A RISEN SAVIOR

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life.--1 John 1:1

Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure.  The Lord knoweth them that are His.  The sanctified minister must have no guile in his mouth.  He must be open as the day, free from every taint of evil.  A sanctified ministry and press will be a power in flashing the light of truth on this untoward generation.  Light, brethren, more light we need.  Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm in the holy mountain.

Gather the host of the Lord, with sanctified hearts, to hear what the Lord will say unto His people; for He has increased light for all who will hear.  Let them be armed and equipped, and come up to the battle--to the help of the Lord against the mighty.  God Himself will work for Israel.  Every lying tongue will be silenced.  The bulwarks of Satan will never triumph.  Victory will attend the third angel's message.

As the Captain of the Lord's host tore down the walls of Jericho, so will the Lord's commandment-keeping people triumph, and all opposing elements be defeated.  Let no soul complain of the servants of God who have come to them with a heaven-sent message.  Do not any longer pick flaws in them, saying, "They are too positive; they talk too strongly."  They may talk strongly; but is it not needed?  God will make the ears of the hearers tingle if they will not heed His voice or His message.  He will denounce those who resist the word of God. (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 410)

REFLECTION:  Let us allow God to control our minds.  Let us not say or do anything that will turn a fellow from the right way.

I feel very sad as I think of how few there are who show that they have tasted the deep blessedness of communion with a risen, ascended Saviour.  Men of the world are striving for the supremacy.  God's followers are to keep Christ ever in view, inquiring, Is this the way of the Lord?  A holy desire to live the life of Christ is to fill our hearts.  In Him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.  In Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Letter 27, March 28, 1903)

BE SPIRITUALLY MINDED

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds of the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded of life and peace.--Romans 8:5-6

We have the assurance that in this age of the world the Holy Spirit will work with mighty power, unless by our unbelief we limit our blessings, and thus lose the advantage we might obtain....

Personal religious experience is needed in every church.  Why?  Because those who are not under the working of the Holy Spirit will not stand amid the perils of the last days.

Unless the revival of the Spirit of God shall come, all their professions will never make the members of the church Christians.  There are sinners in Zion who need to repent of sins that have been cherished as precious treasures.  Until these sins are seen, and thrust from the soul, until every faulty, unlovely trait of character is transformed by the Spirit's influence, God cannot manifest Himself in power.  There is more hope for the open sinner than for the professedly righteous who are not pure, holy, and undefiled....

The spiritual anointing of the Lord will never come to self-sufficient men and women....You will certainly be weighed in the golden scales of the heavenly sanctuary and found wanting....

What kind of witnesses are we for the truth and righteousness?  Are we striving with all our God-given powers to reach the measure of the stature of men and women in Christ?  Are we seeking for His fullness, ever reaching higher and higher, trying to attain the perfection of His character?

When God's servants reach this point, they will be sealed in their foreheads.  The recording angel will declare, "It is done."  They will be complete in Him whose they are by creation and by redemption....

We must be laborers together with God, else we shall fail in the work of overcoming, and our irreligious influence will cause other souls to fail.  No soul is lost that does not draw other souls down with it. (Manuscript 148, October 8, 1899)

REFLECTION:  King Nebuchadnezzar thought he had everything going his way.  But he went from being king of a kingdom to living like an animal, and he finally realized that God was and is and will always be in total control.  What a comforting thought!

SATAN FOUND NOTHING

I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.--John 14:30

Now, while our great High Priest is making the atonement for us, we should seek to become perfect in Christ.  Not even by a thought could our Saviour be brought to yield to the power of temptation.  Satan finds in human hearts some point where he can gain a foothold; some sinful desire is cherished, by means of which his temptations assert their power.  But Christ declared of Himself: "The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in Me." John 14:30.

Satan could find nothing in the Son of God that would enable him to gain the victory.  He had kept His Father's commandments, and there was no sin in Him that Satan could use to his advantage.  This is the condition in which those must be found who shall stand in the time of trouble.

It is in this life that we are to separate sin from us, through faith in the atoning blood of Christ.  Our precious Saviour invites us to join ourselves to Him, to unite our weakness to His strength, our ignorance to His wisdom, our unworthiness to His merits.  God's providence is the school in which we are to learn the meekness and lowliness of Jesus.

The Lord is ever setting before us, not the way we would choose, which seems easier and pleasanter to us, but the true aims of life.  It rests with us to co-operate with the agencies which Heaven employs in the work of conforming our characters to the divine model.  None can neglect or defer this work but at the most fearful peril to their souls. (The Great Controversy, 623)

REFLECTION:  Christ began the work of redemption just where the ruin began.  His first test was on the same point where Adam failed.  It was through temptations addressed to the appetite that Satan had overcome a large proportion of the human race, and his success had made him feel that the control of this fallen planet was in his hands.  But in Christ he found one who was able to resist him, and he left the field of battle a conquered foe. (The Signs of the Times, August 10, 1915)

TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU

How can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man?  And then he will plunder is house.--Matthew 12:29

The spasmodic, fitful movements of some who claim to be Christians are well represented by the work of strong but untrained horses.  When one pulls forward, another pulls back, and at the voice of their master one plunges ahead and the other stands immovable.  If men will not move in concert in the great and grand work for this time, there will be confusion.  It is not a good sign when men refuse to unite with their brethren and prefer to act alone.  Let laborers take into their confidence the brethren who are free to point out every departure from right principles.  If men wear the yoke of Christ, they can not pull apart; they will draw with Christ.

Some workers pull with all the power that God has given them, but they have not yet learned that they should not pull alone.  Instead of isolating themselves, let them draw in harmony with their fellow laborers.  Unless they do this, their activity will work at the wrong time and in the wrong way.  They will often work counter to that which God would have done, and thus work is worse than wasted. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, 258-259)

REFLECTION:  There is no such thing as neutrality in the service of God.  He can not be satisfied with anything short of entire consecration,--consecration of thought, voice, spirit, every organ of mind and body....Those who are convinced that Jesus is the Christ must understand that they are to use all their powers in co-operating with their Redeemer.  They are to wear his yoke, and work in his lines. (The Review and Herald, December 12, 1899)

PUBLISHING WORK DIRECTED BY GOD

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.--Isaiah 61:1

As the end draws near and the work of giving the last warning to the world extends, it becomes more important for those who accept present truth to have a clear understanding of the nature and influence of the Testimonies, which God in His providence has linked with the work of the third angel's message from its very rise. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, 654)

"Ye are My witnesses, saith the Lord," "to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God."

Our publishing work was established by the direction of God and under His special supervision.  It was designed to accomplish a specific purpose.  Seventh-day Adventists have been chosen by God as a peculiar people, separate from the world.  By the great cleaver of truth He has cut them out from the quarry of the world and brought them into connection with Himself.  He has made them His representatives and has called them to be ambassadors for Him in the last work of salvation.  The greatest wealth of truth ever entrusted to mortals, the most solemn and fearful warnings ever sent by God to man, have been committed to them to be given to the world; and in the accomplishment of this work our publishing houses are among the most effective agencies. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, 138)

REFLECTION:  The work that the Saviour was to do on the earth had been fully outlined: "The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; and shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord."  The One thus anointed was "to preach good tidings unto the meek;...to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified." Isaiah 11:2, 3; 61:1-3. (Acts of the Apostles, 224)

WORK TOGETHER--NO INDEPENDENT ATOMS

As the body is one and has many members, but all members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.--1 Corinthians 12:12

Herein lies a grave danger to the prosperity of our work.  We must move discretely, sensibly, in harmony with the judgment of God-fearing counselors; for in this course alone lies our safety and strength.  Otherwise God cannot work with us and by us and for us.

O how Satan would rejoice if he could succeed in his effort to get in among this people, and disorganize the work at a time when through organization is essential, and will be the greatest power to keep out spurious uprisings, and to refute claims not endorsed by the word of God!  We want to hold the lines evenly, that there shall be no breaking down of the system of organization and order that has been built up by wise, careful labor.  License must not be given to disorderly elements that desire to control the work at this time.

Some have advanced the thought that as we near the close of time, every child of God will act independently of any religious organization.  But I have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as every man's being independent.  The stars of heaven are all under law, each influencing the other to do the will of God, yielding their common obedience to the law that controls their action.  And, in order that the Lord's work may advance healthfully and solidly, His people must draw together. (Gospel Workers, 486-487)

REFLECTION:  By a comparison of the church with the human body, the apostle [Paul] aptly illustrated the close and harmonious relationship that should exist among all members of the church of Christ. (The Acts of the Apostles, 317)

I know that the Lord loves His church.  It is not to be disorganized or broken up into independent atoms.  There is not the least consistency in this; there is not the least evidence that such a thing will be. (Letter 16, June 3, 1893)

STAY TOGETHER--CULTIVATE KINDNESS

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.--Galatians 5:22

You need to cultivate kindness and tenderness.  You need to be pitiful and courteous.  Your labors savor too much of severity and an exacting dictatorial, overbearing spirit.  You are not always kindly considerate of the feelings of others, and you create trials and dissatisfaction needlessly.  More love in your labors, and more kindly sympathy, would give you access to hearts and would win souls to Christ and the truth.

You are constantly inclined to individual independence.  You do not realize that independence is a poor thing when it leads you to have too much confidence in yourself and to trust to your own judgment rather than to respect the counsel and highly estimate the judgment of your brethren, especially of those in the offices which God has appointed for the saving of His people.  God has invested His church with special authority and power which no one can be justified in disregarding and despising, for in so doing he despises the voice of God. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, 417)

As I meditated on these things, I felt more and more deeply the sin of neglecting to keep the soul in the love of God.  The Lord does nothing without our cooperation....He in whose heart Christ abides is willing to be pleased.  He thinks no evil, and is content with the assurance that Jesus knows and values aright every soul for whom He died....

The happiness of life is made up of little things.  It is in the power of everyone to practice true Christlike courtesy.  It is not the possession of splendid talents that will help us to overcome, but the conscientious performance of daily duties.  The kind look, the lowly spirit, the contented disposition, the unaffected, sincere interest in the welfare of others--these things are helps in the Christian life.  If the love of Jesus fills the heart, this love will be manifested in the life.  We shall not show a determination to have our own way, a stubborn, selfish unwillingness to be happy or pleased. (Selected Messages, Book 2, 236-237)

REFLECTION:  As you receive the Spirit of Christ--the Spirit of unselfish love and labor for others--you will grow and bring forth fruit.  The graces of the Spirit will ripen in your character.  Your faith will increase, your convictions deepen, your love be made perfect.  More and more you will reflect the likeness of Christ in all that is pure, noble, and lovely. (Christ's Object Lessons, 68)

REMEMBER JERUSALEM

Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple.  And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things?  Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down."--Matthew 24:1-2

The time is not far distant, when, like the early disciples, we shall be forced to seek refuge in desolate places.  As the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal for flight to the Judean Christians, so the assumption of power on the part of our nation in the decree enforcing the papal sabbath will be a warning to us.  It will then be time to leave the large cities, preparatory to leaving the smaller ones for retired homes in secluded placed among the mountains. (Testimonies for the Church 5, 464-465)

Conscientious obedience to the word of God will be treated as rebellion.  Blinded by Satan, the parent will exercise harshness and severity toward the believing child; the master or mistress will oppress the commandment-keeping servant.  Affection will be alienated; children will be disinherited and driven from home.  The words of Paul will be literally fulfilled: "All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." 2 Timothy 3:12.

As the defenders of truth refuse to honor the Sunday-sabbath, some of them will be thrust into prison, some will be exiled, some will be treated as slaves.  To human wisdom all this now seems impossible; but as the restraining Spirit of God shall be withdrawn from men, and they shall be under the control of Satan, who hates the divine precepts, there will be strange developments.  The heart can be very cruel when God's fear and love are removed. (The Great Controversy, 608)

REFLECTION:  The ruin of Jerusalem was a symbol of the final ruin that shall overwhelm the world.  The prophecies that received a partial fulfillment in the overthrow of Jerusalem have a more direct application to the last days.  We are now standing on the threshold of great and solemn events.  A crisis is before us, such as the world has never witnessed. (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 120)
