RECEIVING YOUR CROWN

Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.--2 Timothy 4:8

The inquiry in many hearts is, How shall I find happiness?  We are not to make it our object to live for happiness, but we shall surely find it in the path of humble obedience.  Paul was happy.  He affirms repeatedly that notwithstanding the sufferings, conflicts, and trials that he was called to bear, he enjoyed great consolation.  He says, "I am filled with comfort; I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation."

All the energies of the chiefest of the apostles were bent to a preparation for the future, immortal life; and when the time of departure was at hand, he could exclaim in holy triumph, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day."  And the shout of victory of this warrior of faith has come sounding down the ages to our time.

It is one thing to profess the truth, but it is a very different thing to live it out.  Many who profess to be keeping the commandments of God are deceiving their own souls.  They have no union with Christ, and do not make the truth practical.  In their homes, selfishness in interwoven with their daily life.  There is manifested a want of refinement, an uncourteous, unkind selfishness.

The religion of Jesus should be carried into the home circle, the work-shop, and all the business transactions.  The genuine Christian will show in his life the fruits of the Spirit.  The love of Jesus will flow out naturally in words and deeds of kindness.  Those who yield themselves to the heavenly power, which alone can quell tumultuous passion, will be as angels of peace and blessing in the home circle. (The Signs of the Times, May 22, 1884)

REFLECTION:  We have to love the words of the hymn, "Mansion over the Hilltop" by Ira Stamphill.  All of the words are good.  But pay attention to the specific words that give encouragement: "Don't think me poor or deserted or lonely; I'm not discouraged, I'm heaven bound, I'm just a pilgrim in search of the city, I want a mansion, a harp, and a crown."   Imagine receiving a crown from the hand of Jesus! ("Gospel Songs: Mansion over the Hilltop," http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/gospel-songs-chords/mansion_over_the_hilltop.htm

THE JOY OF JESUS

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.--Hebrews 12:2

Many who profess the name of Christ and claim to be looking for His speedy coming, know not what it is to suffer for Christ's sake.  Their hearts are not subdued by grace, and they are not dead to self, as is often shown in various ways.  At the same time they are talking of having trials.  But the principal cause of their trials is an unsubdued heart, which makes self so sensitive that it is often crossed.

If such could realize what it is to be a humble follower of Christ, a true Christian, they would begin to work in good earnest and begin right.  They would first die to self, then be instant in prayer, and check every passion of the heart.  Give up your self-confidence and self-sufficiency, brethren, and follow the meek Pattern.

Ever keep Jesus in your mind that He is your example and you must tread in His footsteps.  Look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame.  He endured the contradiction of sinners against Himself.  He for our sins was once the meek, slain lamb, wounded, bruised, smitten, and afflicted.

Let us then, cheerfully suffer something for Jesus' sake, crucify self daily, and be partakers of Christ's sufferings here, that we may be made partakers with Him of His glory, and be crowned with glory, honor, immortality, and eternal life. (Early Writings, 113-114)

REFLECTION:  With unutterable love, Jesus welcomes His faithful ones to the joy of their Lord.  The Saviour's joy is in seeing, in the kingdom of glory, the souls that have been saved by His agony and humiliation.  And the redeemed will be sharers in His joy, as they behold, among the blessed, those who have been won to Christ through their prayers, their labors, and their loving sacrifice. (The Great Controversy, 647)

MIDNIGHT DELIVERANCE

Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.--Revelation 6:14

In the time of trouble we all fled from the cities and villages, but were pursued by the wicked, who entered the houses of the saints with a sword.  They raised the sword to kill us, but it broke, and fell as powerless as a straw.  Then we all cried day and night for deliverance, and the cry came up before God.

The sun came up, and the moon stood still.  The streams ceased to flow.  Dark, heavy clouds came up and clashed against each other.  But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters, which shook the heavens and the earth.  The sky opened and shut and was in commotion.  The mountains shook like a reed in the wind, and cast out ragged rocks all around.  The sea boiled like a pot and cast out stones upon the land.

And as God spoke the day and the hour of Jesus' coming and delivered the everlasting covenant to His people, He spoke one sentence, and then paused, while the words were rolling through the earth.  The Israel of God stood with their eyes fixed upward, listening to the words as they came from the mouth of Jehovah, and rolled through the earth like peals of loudest thunder.  It was awfully solemn.  And at the end of every sentence the saints shouted, Glory! Alleluia!"

Their countenances were lighted up with the glory of God; and they shone with the glory, as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai.  The wicked could not look on them for the glory.  And when the never-ending blessing was pronounced on those who had honored God in keeping the Sabbath holy, there was a mighty shout of victory over the beast and over his image. (Early Writings, 34)

REFLECTION:  It was at midnight that God chose to deliver His people.  As the wicked were mocking around them, suddenly the sun appeared, shining in his strength, and the moon stood still.  The wicked looked upon the scene with amazement, while the saints beheld with solemn joy the tokens of their deliverance....there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters, shaking the heavens and the earth.  There was a mighty earthquake.  The graves were opened. (Early Writings, 285)

AWAKE, AWAKE, AWAKE

The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.  And the dead in Christ will rise first.--1 Thessalonians 4:16

The earth mightily shook as the voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints.  They responded to the call and came forth clothed with glorious immortality, crying, "Victory, victory, over death and the grave!  O death, where is thy sting?  O grave, where is thy victory?"  Then the living saints and the risen ones raised their voices in a long, transporting shout of victory.

Those bodies that had gone down into the grave bearing the marks of disease and death came up in immortal health and vigor.  The living saints are changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and caught up with the risen ones, and together they meet their Lord in the air.  Oh, what a glorious meeting!  Friends whom death had separated were united, never more to part.

On each side of the cloudy chariot were wings, and beneath it were living wheels; and as the chariot rolled upward, the wheels cried, "Holy," and the wings, as they moved, cried, "Holy," and the retinue of holy angels around the cloud cried, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!"  And the saints in the cloud cried, "Glory! Alleluia!"  And the chariot rolled upward to the Holy City.

Before entering the city, the saints were arranged in a perfect square, with Jesus in the midst.  He stood head and shoulders above the saints and above the angels.  His majestic form and lovely countenance could be seen by all in the square. (Early Writings, 287-288)

REFLECTION:  Then Jesus' silver trumpet sounded, as He descended on the cloud, wrapped in flames of fire.  He gazed on the graves of the sleeping saints, then raised His eyes and hands to heaven, and cried, "Awake! awake! awake! ye that sleep in the dust, and arise."  Then there was a mighty earthquake.  The graves opened, and the dead came up clothed with immortality.  The 144,000 shouted, "Alleluia!" as they recognized their friends who had been torn from them by death, and in the same moment we were changed and caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air. (Early Writings, 16)

SEATED ON A CLOUD

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye shall see Him, even they who pierced Him.  And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him.  Even so, Amen.--Revelation 1:7

Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest.  I saw the pious slave rise in triumph and victory and shake off the chains that bound him, while his wicked master was in confusion and knew not what to do; for the wicked could not understand the words of the voice of God....

Soon appeared the great white cloud, upon which sat the Son of man.  When it first appeared in the distance, this cloud looked very small.  The angel said that it was the sign of the Son of man.  As it drew nearer the earth, we could behold the excellent glory and majesty of Jesus as He rode forth to conquer.  A retinue of holy angels, with bright, glittering crowns upon their heads, escorted Him on His way.  No language can describe the glory of the scene.  The living cloud of majesty and unsurpassed glory came still nearer, and we could clearly behold the lovely person of Jesus....

The earth trembled before Him, the heavens departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.  "And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"

Those who a short time before would have destroyed God's faithful children from the earth, now witnessed the glory of God which rested upon them.  And amid all their terror they heard the voices of the saints in joyful strains, saying, "Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us." (Early Writings, 286)

REFLECTION:  Soon there appears in the east a small black cloud, about half the size of a man's hand.  It is the cloud which surrounds the Saviour and which seems in the distance to be shrouded in darkness.  The people of God know this to be the sign of the Son of man.  In solemn silence they gaze upon it as it draws nearer the earth, becoming lighter and more glorious, until it is a great white cloud, its base a glory like consuming fire, and above it the rainbow of the covenant.  Jesus rides forth as a mighty conqueror. (The Great Controversy, 640-641)

FROM THE DREGS OF THE EARTH TO SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF GOD

The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory.  You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord will name.  You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and royal diadem in the hand of your God.  You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.--Isaiah 62:2-4

The heirs of God have come from garrets, from hovels, from dungeons, from scaffolds, from mountains, from deserts, from the caves of the earth, from the caverns of the sea.  On earth they were "destitute, afflicted, tormented."  Millions went down to the grave loaded with infamy because they steadfastly refused to yield to the deceptive claims of Satan.  By human tribunals they were adjudged the vilest of criminals.  But now "God is judge Himself." Psalm 50:6.

Now the decisions of earth are reversed.  "The rebuke of His people shall He take away." Isaiah 25:8.  "They shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord."  He hath appointed "to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." Isaiah 62:12; 61:3.  They are no longer feeble, afflicted, scattered, and oppressed.  Henceforth they are to be ever with the Lord.  They stand before the throne clad in richer robes than the most honored of the earth have ever worn.  They are crowned with diadems more glorious than were ever placed upon the brow of earthly monarchs.

The days of pain and weeping are forever ended.  The King of glory has wiped the tears from all faces; every cause of grief has been removed.  Amid the waving of palm branches they pour forth a song of praise, clear, sweet, and harmonious; every voice takes up the strain, until the anthem swells through the vaults of heaven: "Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb."  And all the inhabitants of heaven respond in the ascription: "Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever." Revelation 7:10, 12. (The Great Controversy, 650-651)

REFLECTION:  Allied to the King of kings, the Lord of life and glory, the vilest sinner may become a partaker of the divine nature, and an heir of eternal riches.  "To them gave he power to become sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."  Oh, what condescension, what amazing love, to make fallen man a member of the royal family, a child of the Heavenly King" (The Signs of the Times, August 18, 1881)

DEATH LOST ITS STING

O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?--1 Corinthians 15:55

Amid the reeling of the earth, the flash of lightening, and the roar of thunder, the voice of the Son of God calls forth the sleeping saints.  He looks upon the graves of the righteous, then, raising His hands to heaven, He cries: "Awake, awake, awake, ye that sleep in the dust, and arise!"

Throughout the length and breadth of the earth the dead shall hear that voice, and they that hear shall live.  And the whole earth shall ring with the tread of the exceeding great army of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.  From the prison house of death they come, clothed with immortal glory, crying: "O death, where is thy sting?  O grave where is thy victory?" 1 Corinthians 15:55.  And the living righteous and the risen saints unite their voices in a long, glad shout of victory.

All come forth from their graves the same in stature as when they entered the tomb.  Adam, who stands among the risen throng, is of lofty height and majestic form, in stature but little below the Son of God.  He presents a marked contrast to the people of later generations; in this one respect is shown the great degeneracy of the race.  But all arise with the freshness and vigor of eternal youth.  In the beginning, man was created in the likeness of God, not only in character, but in form and feature.

Sin defaced and almost obliterated the divine image; but Christ came to restore that which had been lost.  He will change our vile bodies and fashion them like unto His glorious body.  The mortal, corruptible form, devoid of comeliness, once polluted with sin, becomes perfect, beautiful, and immortal.  All blemishes and deformities are left in the grave.

Restored to the tree of life on the long-lost Eden, the redeemed will "grow up" (Malachi 4:2) to the full stature of the race in its primeval glory.  The last lingering traces of the curse of sin will be removed, and Christ's faithful ones will appear in "the beauty of the Lord our God," in mind and soul and body reflecting the perfect image of their Lord.  Oh, wonderful redemption! long talked of, long hoped for, contemplated with eager anticipation, but never fully understood. (The Great Controversy, 644-645)

REFLECTION:  Satan cannot hold the dead in his grasp when the Son of God bids them live. (The Desire of Ages, 320)

THE WISE WILL SURRENDER

She is empty, desolate, and waste!  The heart melts, and the knees shake; much pain is in every side, and all their faces are drained of color.--Nahum 2:10

Before His presence "all faces are turned into paleness;" upon the rejecters of God's mercy falls the terror of eternal despair.  "The heart melteth, and the knees smite together,...and the faces of them all gather blackness." Jeremiah 30:6; Nahum 2:10.  The righteous cry with trembling: "Who shall be able to stand?"  The angels' song is hushed, and there is a period of awful silence.  Then the voice of Jesus is heard, saying, "My grace is sufficient for you."  The faces of the righteous are lighted up, and joy fills every heart.  And the angels strike a note higher and sing again as they draw still nearer to the earth.

The King of kings descends upon the cloud, wrapped in flaming fire.  The heavens are rolled together as a scroll, the earth trembles before Him, and every mountain and island is moved out of its place.  "Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about Him.  He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people." Psalm 50:3, 4.

"And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every freeman, hid themselves in the dens and on the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?" Revelation 6:15-17. (The Great Controversy, 641-642)

REFLECTION:  God cannot forbear much longer.  Already His judgments are beginning to fall on some places, and soon His signal displeasure will be felt in other places.

There will be a series of events revealing that God is master of the situation.  The truth will be proclaimed in clear, unmistakable language....Onward and still onward the work will advance until the whole earth shall have been warned, and then shall the end come. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, 96)

GOD IS OUR REFUGE

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.--Psalm 46:1

Through a rift in the clouds there beams a star whose brilliancy is increased fourfold in contrast with the darkness.  It speaks hope and joy to the faithful but severity and wrath to the transgressors of God's law.  Those who have sacrificed all for Christ are now secure, hidden as in the secret of the Lord's pavilion.  They have been tested, and before the world and the despisers of truth they have evinced their fidelity to Him who died for them.

A marvelous change has come over those who have held fast their integrity in the very face of death.  They have been suddenly delivered from the dark and terrible tyranny of men transformed to demons.  Their faces, so lately pale, anxious, and haggard, are now aglow with wonder, faith, and love.  Their voices rise in triumphant song: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof." Psalm 46:1-3.

While these words of holy trust ascend to God, the clouds sweep back, and the starry heavens are seen,...Then there appears against the sky a hand holding two tables of stone folded together.  Says the prophet: "The heavens shall declare His righteousness: for God is judge Himself." Psalm 50:6.

That holy law, God's righteousness, that amid thunder and flame was proclaimed from Sinai as the guide of life, is now revealed to men as the rule of judgment.  The hand opens the tables, and there are seen the precepts of the Decalogue, traced as with a pen of fire.  The words are so plain that all can read them. (The Great Controversy, 638-639)

REFLECTION:  As in the days of the great deluge Noah was preserved in the ark that God had prepared for him, so in these days of destruction and calamity God will be the refuge of His believing ones....Then shall we not make the Lord our surety and our defense? (Letter 258, August 16, 1907)

ISAIAH DECLARES THE DAY OF THE LORD

Wail, for the day of the Lord is at hand!  It will come as destruction from the Almighty.--Isaiah 13:6

Graves are opened, and "many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth...awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." Daniel 12:2.  All who have died in the faith of the third angel's message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God's covenant of peace with those who have kept His law.  "They also which pierced Him" (Revelation 1:7), those that mocked and derided Christ's dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of His truth and His people, are raised to behold Him in His glory and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient.

Thick clouds still cover the sky; yet the sun now and then breaks through, appearing like the avenging eye of Jehovah.  Fierce lightenings leap from the heavens, enveloping the earth in a sheet of flame.  Above the terrific roar of thunder, voices, mysterious and awful, declare the doom of the wicked.  The words spoken are not comprehended by all, but they are distinctly understood by the false teachers.

Those who a little before were so reckless, so boastful and defiant, so exultant in their cruelty to God's commandment-keeping people, are now overwhelmed with consternation and shuddering in fear.  Their wails are heard above the sound of the elements.  Demons acknowledge the deity of Christ and tremble before His power, while men are supplicating for mercy and groveling in abject terror. (The Great Controversy, 637-638)

REFLECTION:  Said the prophets of old, as they beheld in holy vision the day of God: "Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty." Isaiah 13:6.  "Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of His majesty.  The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.  For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon everyone that is proud and lofty, and upon everyone that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low." (The Great Controversy, 638)
