WORSHIP THE BEAST--RECEIVE THE PLAGUES

Out of the temple came the seven angels having the seven plagues, clothed in pure bright linen, and having their chests girded with golden bands.  Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever.  The temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.--Revelation 15:6-8

When Christ ceases His intercession in the sanctuary, the unmingled wrath threatened against those who worship the beast and his image and receive his mark (Revelation 14:9, 10), will be poured out.  The plagues upon Egypt when God was about to deliver Israel were similar in character to those more terrible and extensive judgments which are to fall upon the world just before the final deliverance of God's people.

Says the revelator, in describing those terrific scourges: "There fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worship his image."  The sea "became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea."  And "the rivers and fountains of waters...became blood."  Terrible as these inflictions are, God's justice stands fully vindicated.  The angel of God declares: "Thou are righteous, O Lord,...because Thou hast judged thus.  For they have shed the blood of the saints and prophets, and Thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy." Revelation 16:2-6.

By condemning the people of God to death, they have as truly incurred the guilt of their blood as if it had been shed by their hands.  In like manner Christ declared the Jews of His time guilty of all the blood of holy men which had been shed since the days of Abel; for they possessed the same spirit and were seeking to do the same work with these murderers of the prophets. (The Great Controversy, 627-628)

REFLECTION:  The seven last plagues were soon to be poured out upon those who have no shelter; yet the world regarded them no more than they would so many drops of water that were about to fall.  I was then made capable of enduring the awful sight of the seven last plagues, the wrath of God. (Early Writings, 64)

GOD'S STRANGE ACT

Say to them: "As I live," says the Lord God, "I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.  Turn, turn from your evil ways!  For why should you die, O house of Israel?"--Ezekiel 33:11

God's judgments will be visited upon those who are seeking to oppress and destroy His people.  His long forbearance with the wicked emboldens men in transgression, but their punishment is nonetheless certain and terrible because it is long delayed.  "The Lord shall rise up as in Mount Perazim, He shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that He may do His work, His strange work; and bring to pass His act, His strange act." Isaiah 28:21.  To our merciful God the act of punishment is a strange act.  "As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked." Ezekiel 33:11.

The Lord is "merciful and gracious long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,...forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin."  Yet He will "by no means clear the guilty."  "The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked." Exodus 34:6, 7; Nahum 1:3.  By terrible things in righteousness He will vindicate the authority of His downtrodden law.  The severity of the retribution awaiting the transgressors may be judged by the Lord's reluctance to execute justice.  The nation with which He bears long, and which He will not smite until it has filled up the measure of its iniquity in God's account, will finally drink the cup of wrath unmixed with mercy. (The Great Controversy, 627)

REFLECTION:  The Lord seeks to save, not to destroy.  He delights in the rescue of sinners....By warnings and entreaties He calls the wayward to cease from their evil-doing and to turn to Him and live.  He gives His chosen messengers a holy boldness, that those who hear may fear and be brought to repentance....The messengers of the Lord are never to fear the face of man, but are to stand unflinchingly for the right. (Prophet and Kings, 105)

THERE ARE NO LITTLE SINS

Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.--1 John 2:8

God does not regard all sins as of equal magnitude; there are degrees of guilt in His estimation as well as in that of finite man.  But however trifling this or that wrong in their course may seem in the eyes of men, no sin is small in the sight of God.  The sins which man is disposed to look upon as small may be the very ones which God accounts as great crimes.

The drunkard is despised and is told that his sin will exclude him from heaven, while pride, selfishness, and covetousness go unrebuked.  But these are sins that are especially offensive to God.  He "resisteth the proud," and Paul tells us that covetousness is idolatry.  Those who are familiar with the denunciations against idolatry in the word of God will at once see how grave an offense this sin is. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, 337)

It is the supposed little sins that will exclude us from heaven.  We cannot carry with us a part of our sinful selves, that sensitiveness which is always ready to be hurt, and cry out.  Our refusal to let self die and our life be hid with Christ in God, will leave us in unbelief and transgression of the law.

The gospel has not abolished from the law, or detracted one little from its claims.  It still demands holiness in every part.  There is no such thing as making the law void through faith in Christ.  The law is the echo of God's own voice, giving to every soul the invitation, "Come up higher."  Be holy, holier still. (Manuscript 38, March 26, 1899)

REFLECTION:  The strongest witness that God has sent His Son into the world is the existence of harmony and union among men of varied dispositions who form His church.  This witness it is the privilege of the followers of Christ to bear.  But in order to do this, they must place themselves under Christ's command.  Their characters must be conformed to His character and their wills to His will. (The Acts of the Apostles, 549)

HAVE NO UNCONFESSED SINS

"Come now, and let us reason together," says the Lord, "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool."--Isaiah 1:18

"Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.  Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb" yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.  Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands." Isaiah 49:14-16.  The Lord of hosts has said: "He that toucheth you toucheth the apple of His eye." Zechariah 2:8. (The Great Controversy, 626)

Had not Jacob previously repented of his sin in obtaining the birthright by fraud, God would not have heard his prayer and mercifully preserved his life.  So, in the time of trouble, if the people of God had unconfessed sins to appear before them while tortured with fear and anguish, they would be overwhelmed; despair would cut off their faith, and they could not have confidence to plead with God for deliverance.  But while they have a deep sense of their unworthiness, they have no concealed wrongs to reveal.  Their sins have gone beforehand to judgment and have been blotted out, and they cannot bring them to remembrance. (The Great Controversy, 620)

REFLECTION:  The whole heart must be yielded to God, or the change can never be wrought in us by which we are to be restored to His likeness.  By nature we are alienated from God....God desires to heal us, to set us free.  But since this requires an entire transformation, a renewing of our whole nature, we must yield ourselves wholly to Him. (Steps to Christ, 43)

WAR DECLARED ON GOD'S COMMANDMENTS

He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or in their foreheads.--Revelation 13:16

As the Sabbath has become the special point of controversy throughout Christendom, and religious and secular authorities have combined to enforce the observance of the Sunday, the persistent refusal of a small minority to yield to the popular demand will make them objects of universal execration.  It will be urged that the few who stand in opposition to an institution of the church and a law of the state ought not to be tolerated; that it is better for them to suffer than for whole nations to be thrown into confusion and lawlessness.

The same argument many centuries ago was brought against Christ by the "rulers of the people."  "It is expedient for us," said the wily Caiaphas, "that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not." John 11:50.

This argument will appear conclusive; and a decree will finally be issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, denouncing them as deserving of the severest of punishment and giving the people liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death.  Romanism in the Old World and apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts. (The Great Controversy, 616-616)

REFLECTION:  The third angel's warning is: "If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God."...The "image to the beast" represents that form of apostate Protestantism which will be developed when the Protestant churches shall seek the aid of the civil power for the enforcement of their dogmas.  The "mark of the beast" still remains to be defined. (The Great Controversy, 445)

DEVIL'S HARVEST

Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them!  Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea!  For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.--Revelation 12:12

When the angel of mercy folds her wings and departs, Satan will do the evil deeds he has long wished to do.  Storm and tempest, war and bloodshed,--in these things he delights, and thus he gathers in his harvest.  And so completely will men be deceived by him that they will declare that these calamities are the result of the desecration of the first day of the week.  From the pulpits of the popular churches will be heard the statement that the world is being punished because Sunday is not honored as it should be.

Satan will bring in pleasing fables to meet the minds of all who love not the truth.  With angry zeal he will accuse commandment-keepers.  Furious because he cannot pervert their faith, he will vent his rage upon them.  He will give to his angels the work of hardening wicked men against the truth.  Knowing that he has but a short time, he will work with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish.  In the form of friends who have died, fallen angels will come to the children of men, just and unjust. (The Review and Herald, September 17, 1901)

Fearful is the issue to which the world is to be brought.  The powers of earth, uniting to war against the commandments of God, will decree that "all. both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond" (Revelation 13:16), shall conform to the customs of the church by the observance of the false sabbath.  All who refuse compliance will be visited with civil penalties, and it will finally be declared that they are deserving of death.  On the other hand, the law of God enjoining the Creator's rest day demands obedience and threatens wrath against all who transgress its precepts. (The Great Controversy, 604)

REFLECTION:  There is a constant conflict between the two great armies led by the Prince of life and the Prince of the powers of darkness.  The devil, assisted by his angels, is constantly engaged in the most determined effort to gather souls under his banner, while Jesus Christ and holy angels are diligently at work pressing back the powers of darkness, rescuing souls from the grasp of Satan, and gathering them under the blood-stained banner of Prince Immanuel. (The Review and Herald, December 12, 1878)

NEVER FORSAKEN NEVER FORGOTTEN

The poor and needy seek water, but there is none, their tongues fail for thirst.  I, the Lord, will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.--Isaiah 41:17

The people of God will not be free from suffering; but while persecuted and distressed, while they endure privation and suffer for want of food they will not be left to perish.  That God who cared for Elijah will not pass by one of His self-sacrificing children.  He who numbers the hairs of their head will care for them, and in time of famine they shall be satisfied.  While the wicked are dying from hunger and pestilence, angels will shield the righteous and supply their wants.  To him that "walketh righteously" is the promise: "Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure."  "When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them." Isaiah 41:17. (The Great Controversy, 629)

The Christian is likened to the cedar of Lebanon.  I have read that this tree does more than send down a few short roots into the yielding loam.  It sends strong roots deep down into the earth, and strikes down further and still further in search of a still stronger hold.  And in the fierce blast of the tempest, it stands firm, held by its network of cables beneath.

So the Christian strikes root deep into Christ.  He has faith in his Redeemer.  He knows in whom he believes.  He is fully persuaded that Jesus is the Son of God and the Saviour of sinners.  The goodly sound of the gospel is received without conflicting doubts.  The roots of faith strike deep down.  Genuine Christians, like the cedar of Lebanon, do not grow in the soft surface soil, but are rooted in God, riveted in the clefts of the mountain rocks. (Letter 96, June 26, 1902)

REFLECTION:  What greater encouragement and assurance than this could the Lord give his loyal, commandment-keeping people?...As we produce the fruit of thanksgiving, we bear living evidence that by connection with Christ we are placed on vantage ground.  God is the fountain of life and power.  He can make the wilderness a fruitful field for those who keep his commandments; for it is for the glory of his name to do this. (The Review and Herald, November 20, 1900)

MOUNTAIN SANCTUARIES

He will dwell on high; His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; bread will be given him, His water will be sure.--Isaiah 33:16

As the decree issued by the various rulers of Christendom against commandment keepers shall withdraw the protection of government and abandon them to those who desire their destruction, the people of God will flee from the cities and villages and associate together in companies, dwelling in the most desolate and solitary places.  Many will find refuge in the strongholds of the mountains.

Like the Christians of the Piedmont valleys, they will make the high places of the earth their sanctuaries and will thank God for "the munitions of rocks." Isaiah 33:16.  But many of all nations and of all classes, high and low, rich and poor, black and white, will be cast into the most unjust and cruel bondage.  The beloved of God pass weary days, bound in chains, shut in by prison bars, sentenced to be slain, some apparently left to die of starvation in dark and loathsome dungeons.  No human ear is open to hear their moans; no human hand is ready to lend them help.

Will the Lord forget His people in this trying hour?  Did He forget faithful Noah when judgments were visited upon the antediluvian world?  Did He forget Lot when the fire came down from heaven to consume the cities of the plain?  Did He forget Joseph surrounded by idolaters in Egypt?  Did He forget Elijah when the oath of Jezebel threatened him with the fate of the prophets of Baal?  Did He forget Jeremiah in the dark and dismal pit of his prison house?  Did He forget the three worthies in the fiery furnace? or Daniel in the den of lions? (The Great Controversy, 626)

REFLECTION:  In the last great conflict of the controversy with Satan those who are loyal to God will see every earthly support cut off.  Because they refuse to break His law in obedience to earthly powers, they will be forbidden to buy or sell...."bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure." Isaiah 33:16.  By this promise the children of God will live.  When the earth shalt be wasted with famine, they shall be fed. (The Desire of Ages, 121-122)

BELIEVE THE WARNINGS AND RESPOND

If therefore thou shall not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.--Revelation 3:3 KJV

The evil servant says in his heart, "My lord delayeth his coming."  He does not say that Christ will not come.  He does not scoff at the ideas of His second coming.  But in his heart and by his actions and words he declares that the Lord's coming is delayed.  He banishes from the minds of others the conviction that the Lord is coming quickly.  His influence leads men to presumptions, careless delay.  They are confirmed in their worldliness and stupor.

Earthly passions, corrupt thoughts, take possession of the mind.  The evil servant eats and drinks with the drunken, unites with the world in pleasure seeking.  He smites his fellow servants, accusing and condemning those who are faithful to their Master.  He mingles with the world. Like grows with like in transgression.  It is a fearful assimilation.  With the world he is taken in the snare.  "The lord of that servant shall come....In an hour that he is not aware of, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites."

"If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee." Revelation 3:3.  The advent of Christ will surprise the false teachers.  They are saying, "Peace and safety."  Like the priests and teachers before the fall of Jerusalem, they look for the church to enjoy earthly prosperity and glory.  The signs of the times they interpret as foreshadowing this.  But what saith the word of Inspiration?  "Sudden destruction cometh upon them." 1 Thessalonians 5:3.  Upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth, upon all who make this world their home, the day of God will come as a snare.  It comes to them as a prowling thief. (The Desire of Ages, 635)

REFLECTION:  Soon--none know how soon--it will pass to the cases of the living.  In the awful presence of God our lives are to come up in review.  At this time above all others it behooves every soul to heed the Saviour's admonition: "Watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is." Mark 13:33.  "If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee." Revelation 3:3. (The Great Controversy, 490)

SOLA SCRIPTURA

The statues of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.--Psalm 19:8

The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living.  Rulers and statesmen, men who occupy positions of trust and authority, thinking men and women of all classes, have their attention fixed upon the events taking place about us.  They are watching the relations that exist among the nations.  They observe the intensity that is taking possession of every earthly element, and they recognize that something great and decisive is about to take place--that the world is on the verge of a stupendous crisis.

The Bible, and the Bible only, gives a correct view of these things.  Here are revealed the great final scenes in the history of our world, events that already are casting their shadows before, the sound of their approach causing the earth to tremble and men's hearts to fail them for fear. (Prophets and Kings, 537)

God's message for the inhabitants of earth today is, "Be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh." Matthew 24:44.  The conditions prevailing in society, and especially in the great cities of the nations, proclaim in thunder tones that the hour of God's judgment is come and that the end of all things earthly is at hand.  We are standing on the threshold of the crisis of the ages.  In quick succession the judgments of God will follow one another--fire, and flood, and earthquake, with war and bloodshed.  We are not to be surprised at this time by events both great and decisive; for the angel of mercy cannot remain much longer to shelter the impenitent. (Prophet and Kings, 278)

REFLECTION:  To many the Bible is as a lamp without oil, because they have turned their minds into channels of speculative belief that bring misunderstanding and confusion.  The work of higher criticism, in dissecting, conjecturing, is destroying faith in the Bible as a divine revelation.  It is robbing God's word of power to control, uplift, and inspire human lives.  By spiritualism, multitudes are taught to believe that desire is the highest law, that license is liberty, and that man is accountable only to himself. (The Acts of the Apostles, 474)
