OCTOBER 3

And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them (Num. 6:27).

It would be well to memorize the beautiful Aaronic blessing in the three verses preceding: "The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: the Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.."  Israel was the people of God.  They were called by His name and were to represent Him to the world.

Israel was blocked as a nation as long as they walked in the path of obedience.  The same is true of God's spiritual Israel today.  The Lord led Israel through the wilderness because His name was open them.  And His true children can say, "He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake" (Ps. 23:3).

The wise man once exclaimed, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe" (Prov. 18:10).  Christian believers today carry the very name of Christ.  They are followers of Jesus.  Those who have kept His Word and not denied His name (Rev. 3:8) have this promise: "I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth" (Rev. 3:10).  And of each overcomer God declares, "I will write upon him the name of my God" (verse 12).

Take the name of Jesus with you,
                                        Child of sorrow and of woe;
It will joy and comfort give you.
Take it, then, where're you go.

MEDITATION PRAYER:  "I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will  I praise thee" (Ps. 22:22).

The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there (Ps. 87:6).

Read the two verses preceding: "I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.  And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her."

It was Oliver Wendell Holmes who said, "We are omnibuses in which our ancestors ride."  So God takes note of our environment and our inheritance.  He knows all about us.  God knows all about our bloodstream, and our thought stream, too, and He makes allowance for all these things.  That's why the Scripture declares that He is no respecter of persons.  God, and God alone, knows how to balance the inheritance of the chromosomes and the intricate influences of environment.  Someone has well said that He is too wise to make a mistake and too good to be unkind in His dealing with us.  The most important question for each of us is Have I been born again? (1 Peter 1:23).  God knows the answer to this question, too.

A young conscript on the battlefield of Europe was confronted with his first cavalry charge.  A mounted officer was about to dispatch him with one sweep of his sword, when suddenly he recognized him as the son of one of his best friends.  Instantly he changed the pitch of the blade, and slapped the young man across the back with the broad side of his sword.  The officer had recognized the lad's heritage, remembered whose son he was and where he was born, and acted accordingly.  Will not our Savior, who knows all about us and loves us still, do the same?  His records are more accurate than those of the county courthouse.  Someday the Lord will count when He writes up the people.  It is our privilege to know now that our names are written in the book of life (Phil. 4:3).

MEDITATION PRAYER:  "Judge me, O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness" (Ps. 35:24).

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success (Joshua 1:8).

It is natural to want success, to be prosperous.  And here is the formula: the law of God in the mouth, in the mind, in the heart, revealed in obedience.  This is the way to have not only success but good success.

The entire universe--the solar system, galaxies, planets, plant life, animal life, even human beings, all that we know and see about us--obeys physical law.  This law is the law of God.  Broken law always brings its penalty.  "The wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23).  In the spiritual world, obedience to the law of God is necessary to spiritual life.  While we are saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8), this faith leads to obedience.  It is the faith that works by love (Gal. 5:6).  It is actually the righteousness of the law that is "fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Rom. 8:4).

David declares by inspiration: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly....But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night....And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper" (Ps. 1:1-3).  True belief leads to obedience and to blessing.  The obedient life is a successful life.

Some time ago a United Press dispatch reported that at the University of California termites had eaten through a large stack of pamphlets entitled Control of Termites.  This shows that information alone is not enough.  There must be a practical application.

Speaking to His disciples regarding the things He had taught, Jesus said, "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them" (John 13:17).

MEDITATION PRAYER:  "Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments" (Ps. 119:6).
