FORM OF GODLINESS

As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.  Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.--Jude 7-8

In some places where the opposition is very pronounced, the lives of God's messengers may be endangered.  It is then their privilege to follow the example of their Master and go to another place.  "Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel," Christ said, "till the Son of man be come." [Matthew 10:23.]...

Those in the world, having lost their connection with God, are making desperate, insane efforts to make centers of themselves.  This causes distrust of one another, which is followed by crime.  The kingdoms of the world will be divided against themselves.  Fewer and fewer will become the sympathetic cords which bind man in brotherhood to his fellow man.  The natural egotism of the human heart will be worked upon by Satan.  He will use the uncontrolled wills and violent passions which were never brought under control of God's will.

This man wants his own way; the next man wants his own way.  Every man's hand will be against his fellow man.  Brother will rise against brother, sister against sister, parents against children, and children against parents.  All will be in confusion.  Relatives will betray one another.  There will be secret plotting to destroy life.  Destruction, misery, and death will be seen on every hand.  Men will follow the unrestrained bent of their hereditary and cultivated tendency to evil. (Letter 20, January 28, 1901)

REFLECTION:  How often, in our own day, is the love of pleasure disguised by a "form of godliness"!  A religion that permits men, while observing the rites of worship, to devote themselves to selfish or sensual gratification, is as pleasing to the multitudes now as in the days of Israel.  And there are still pliant Aarons, who, while holding positions of authority in the church, will yield to the desires of the unconsecrated, and thus encourage them in sin. (Patriarchs and Prophets, 317)

SHAKE OFF THE DUST--KEEP MOVING

Whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.--Matthew 10:14

Often God's workers are opposed in the place where they labor, and thus their usefulness is hindered.  They may have done their best in all wisdom.  They have sown good and precious seed.  But the opposing elements become fiercer and more discouraging, and it may be wise for them to go to another place, for even though some are convinced of the truth, they are intimidated by the opposition.  They have not the courage to acknowledge that their reason is convicted.

Let the messengers of truth pass on to another field.  Here there may [meet] a more favorable class of people, and may successfully accomplish the work of sowing and reaping.  The report of their success will find its way to the place where God's work was apparently unsuccessful, and the next messenger of truth who goes there will be more favorably received.  The seed sown in trial and discouragement will be seen to have life and vitality.  First will appear the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear.

The rejection of the truth of the gospel by some prepares the way for its reception by others, who can see the weakness and inconsistency of the arguments used to make the truth of none effect.  Thus those who oppose the counsel of God are by their inconsistency advancing the truth rather than hindering it.  One thing we must be prepared to encounter; the enemy's determined resistance.  He works through human agencies whom he can use to hold the people in ignorance of the word of the Lord. (Letter 20, January 28, 1901)

REFLECTION:  These disciples were to be heralds of the truth, to prepare the way for the coming of their Master.  The message they had to bear was the word of eternal life, and the destiny of men depended upon their reception or rejection of it.  To impress the people with its solemnity, Jesus bade his disciples, "Whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.  Verily I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city." (The Desire of Ages, 352)

SOWING AND REAPING

I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.--John 4:38

All parts of God's vineyard are to be worked.  There is need of wise men and wise women, who will labor unitedly to accomplish the work committed to them.

God will use them as His instruments in the conversion of souls.  They will reap the harvest of the seed sown by the great Teacher.  Let those who go forth into the great harvest field, some to sow and some to reap, ever remember that they are not to take to themselves the glory of the result of their work.  God's appointed agencies have been at work before them, preparing the way for the sowing of the seed and the reaping of the harvest....

Those who sow the seed, who present before large and small gatherings the testing truths for this time, at the cost of much labor, may not always gather the harvest.  After they have done their work and rest from their labors, other men of God's appointment may go over the ground, and under their labors many souls may see the truth.  Adversity, sorrow, loss of property, changes of God's providence, recall to their minds with vivid distinctness the words spoken by the faithful servants of God many years before.  Thus the way is prepared for the finishing of the work of the sower, for the reaping of the harvest.  There is much rejoicing as the precious fruit is gathered.

Let every laborer do his very best to improve his talents that he may be a successful sower as well as a successful reaper of the harvest which other men of God's appointment have sown. (Letter 20, January 28, 1901)

REFLECTION:  Jesus said to the disciples, "I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor: other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors."...The disciples were not to regard this as the result of their own efforts.  They were entering into other men's labors.  Ever since the fall of Adam Christ had been committing the seed of the word to His chosen servants, to be sown in human hearts.  And an unseen agency, even an omnipotent power, had worked silently but effectively to produce the harvest. PUT YOUR FAITH IN GOD TO WORK

Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.--Hebrews 11:6

The [Israelites] were sluggish and selfish.  The Lord did not call them "My people," because they had not shown themselves willing in the day of their opportunity.  They had not obeyed promptly the word of the Lord.  They made pleas for delay.  They tried to present a reason why they should delay.  They were ingenious in framing excuses.  They had begun, but they were broken off in their work because of the hindrance of their enemies.  This, they reasoned, proved that it was not the proper time to build.  They declared that the Lord had interposed difficulties to reprove their hot haste.  But they had no real excuse for leaving the work.

When the heaviest objections were raised, this was the time to build.  Their real motive was a selfish dislike to go to extra trouble and expense and encounter danger by arousing the opposition of their enemies.  They did not possess that faith that is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.  They did not want to move by faith, but to walk out by sight, and no further.  Therefore they were easily turned aside from the work.

This history will be repeated.  There will be religious failures because men have not faith.  When they look at the things that are seen, impossibilities present themselves, but God knows nothing of impossibilities.  The great work of God will advance only by the push of faith. (Manuscript 116, October 3, 1897)

REFLECTION:  The work of grace upon the heart is not an instantaneous work.  It is effected by continuous, daily watching and believing the promises of God.  The repentant, believing one, who cherishes faith and earnestly desires the renewing grace of Christ, God will not turn away empty.  He will give him grace.  And ministering angels will aid him as he perseveres in his efforts to advance. (Evangelism, 287)

GOD'S GENEROSITY HAS A LIMIT

Therefore I prayed to the Lord, and said: "O Lord God, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand."--Deuteronomy 9:26

"But all the congregation bade stone them with stones."...

And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.  And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me?  And how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?  I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they."

We have a positive evidence that the anger of the Lord is awakened against the rebellious people--those who had been blessed with great light and precious opportunities to know the will of God....

If the people of God had walked in His counsel, the work of God would have advanced, the message of truth would have been borne to all people that dwell on the face of the whole earth.  Had the people of God believed Him and been doers of His Word, had they kept His commandments, the angel would not have come flying through heaven with the message to the four angels that were to let loose the winds that they should blow upon the earth, saying Hold, hold the four winds that they blow not upon the earth until I have sealed the servants of God in their foreheads.

But because the people are disobedient, unthankful, unholy, as were ancient Israel time is prolonged that all may hear the last message of mercy proclaimed with a loud voice.  The Lord's work has been hindered, the sealing time delayed.  Many have not heard the truth.  But the Lord will give them a chance to hear and be converted.  (Letter 106, May 14, 1897)

REFLECTION:  It is the Saviour's purpose that human beings, purified and sanctified, shall be His helping hand.  For this great privilege let us give thanks to Him who "hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son." (The Acts of the Apostles, 478)

ROOT AND BRANCH

"For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble.  And the day which is coming shall burn them up," says the Lord of hosts, "That will leave them neither root nor branch."--Malachi 4:1

The confederacy of evil will not stand.  The Lord says, "Associate yourselves, Oh ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces;...Take counsel together, and it shall come to naught; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.  For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people saying, Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear nor be afraid.  Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread: and he shall be for a sanctuary." [Isaiah 8:9-14.]

Satan will use his agencies to carry out diabolical devices, to overpower the saints of God, as in times past he used the Roman power to stay the course of Protestantism; yet the people of God can look calmly at the whole array of evil also.  The people of God are to advance in the same spirit in which Jesus met the assaults of the prince of darkness in the past.

The evil confederacy can advance only in the course which Jesus has marked out before them; every step of their advance brings the saints of God nearer the great white throne, nearer the successful termination of their warfare.  The confederacy of evil will finally be destroyed, for the prophet says, "Behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven' and all that proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall be as stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch." [Malachi 4:1.] (Manuscript 92, 1894)

REFLECTION:  Satan, the root of every sin, and all evil workers, who are his branches, shall be utterly cut off.  An end will be made of sin, with all the woe and ruin that have resulted from it.  Says the psalmist, "Thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name forever and ever.  O thou enemy, destruction are come to a perpetual end." Psalm 9:5, 6. (Patriarchs and Prophets, 341)

LET NO MAN DECEIVE YOU

For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.--1 John 2:16-17

Almost every phase of talent is now being brought into captivity to the prince of the power of darkness.  Worldly minded men, because they wish to exalt themselves, and have separated from God, do not love to retain God in their knowledge, for they claim to possess a higher, grander intellect than that of Jesus Christ.  Satan envies Christ, and makes the claim that he is entitled to a higher position that the Commander of heaven.  His self-exaltation led him to despise the law of God, and resulted in his expulsion from heaven.

Through the papacy he has manifested his character, and brought out the principles of his government.  Of this power the apostle Paul says, "Let no man deceive you by any means, for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God....For the mystery of iniquity doeth already work....

That Wicked shall be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming, even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." [2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4, 7-12.] (Manuscript 92, 1894)

REFLECTION:  The days of Noah and Lot pictured the condition of the world just before the coming of the Son of man.  The Scriptures pointing forward to this time declare that Satan will work with all power and "with all deceivableness of unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10.  His working is plainly revealed by the rapidly increasing darkness, the multitudinous errors, heresies, and delusions of these last days.

Not only is Satan leading the world captive, but his deceptions are leavening the professed churches of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair. (Christ's Object Lessons, 414)

HOOFS AND HORNS

Even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;...who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.--Romans 1:28, 32

Satan personates the serpent in Eden, regarding this creature as best adapted for his line of temptations.  Satan has been increasing in skillful methods by constantly practicing upon the human mind.  It is his one purpose to complete the work which he began in Eden, and work the ruin of mankind.  Through his mysterious workings he can insinuate himself into the circles of the most educated and refined, for he was once an exalted being, in a high position of responsibility among the heavenly hosts.  It is a mistake to represent him as a monstrous being with hoofs and horns, for he is still a fallen angel.  He is capable of uniting the highest intellectual greatness with the basest cruelty and the most degrading corruption.  If he had not this power, many would escape his snares who are now charmed with his attractive representations and taken captive by his delusions.

As the Spirit of God shall be withdrawn from the earth, Satan's power will be more and more manifest.  The knowledge that he had through being in connection with God, as a covering cherub, he will now use to subordinate his subjects who fell from their high estate.  He will use every power of his exalted intellect to misrepresent God and to instigate rebellion against Jesus Christ, the Commander of heaven.  In the synagogue of Satan he brings under his scepter, and into his counsels, those agents whom he can use to promote his worship.  It is not a strange matter to find a species of refinement, and a manifestation of intellectual greatness, in the lives and characters of those who are inspired by fallen angels.  Satan can impart scientific knowledge, and give men chapters upon philosophy.  He is conversant with history, and versed in worldly wisdom. (The Signs of the Times, May 28, 1894)

REFLECTION:  Satan is watching that he may find the mind in an unguarded moment and so get possession of it.  We do not want to be ignorant of his devices, neither do we want to be overpowered by his devices.  He is pleased with the pictures that represent him as having horns and hoofs, for he has intelligence; he was once an angel of light.  To these that trust in their intelligence he will make believe that they can correct the Scriptures....

You need the Holy Spirit of God, the divine power to cooperate with you to discern the trap that the devil is preparing, and escape it.  He is going to lead the religious world captive. (Manuscript 11, March 28, 1893)

February 1                                LAKE OF FIRE

For every warrior's sandal from the noisy battle, and garments rolled in blood, will be used for burning and fuel of fire.--Isaiah 9:5

The Scriptures positively forbid intercourse with evil angels on the supposition of communion with the dead.  Through this deception Satan can educate souls in his school of falsehood, and make of none effect the lessons that Christ would teach, which, if practiced, would result in the eternal life of those who obey.  Satan is seeking to form a great confederacy of evil by uniting fallen men and fallen angels.

But the Lord says: "When they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and that mutter; should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?  To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."  "And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a-whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people."...

The great power that attends Spiritualism has its origin in the great leading rebel, Satan, the prince of devils.  It is through his sacrifice that evil angels have been able to substitute themselves for the dead, and through lying hypocrisy they have led men to have intercourse with devils.  Those who commune with the supposed spirits of the dead are communing with those who will have a corrupting, demoralizing power upon the mind.  Christ commanded that we should have no intercourse with sorcerers and with those who have familiar spirits.  This class are represented in the Gospel as among those who shall perish in their iniquity,--"the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone." (Signs of the Times, May 28, 1894)

REFLECTION:  Fire comes down from God out of heaven.  The earth is broken up.  The weapons concealed in its depths are drawn forth.  Devouring flames burst from every yawning chasm.  The very rocks are on fire.  The day has come that shall burn as an oven.  The elements melt with fervent heat,  the earth also, and the works that are therein are burned up....The earth's surface seems one molten mass--a vast, seething lake of fire.  It is the time of the judgment and perdition of ungodly men--"the day of the Lord's vengeance, and the year of recompenses from the controversy of Zion." Isaiah 34:8. (The Great Controversy, 672-673)
