Day 1    Read Genesis 1 and 2; Ps. 8; 19; 29; and 33

Today's Reading covers the story of Creation and some poetic passages inspired by contemplating God's creative power.

Memory gem:  "By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth" (Ps. 33:6).

Thought for today:
Some seem to feel they have solved the riddle of Creation by pushing it back a billion or a hundred billion years into the past--it doesn't matter which, because nobody has any idea of how much a billion is anyway.  They just push it back a few billion years and leave the impression that anything that started that long ago just started itself!  But this sort of thinking solves nothing.  Whether six billion or six million or six thousand years ago, nothing can originate nothing.  Existence cannot come from nonexistence.  Every effect must have an adequate cause.  In other words, creation must have had a Creator.

"In the beginning God" (Genesis 1:1) are the sublime words with which the book of Genesis begins, and no philosophy can ever go back to those words, "In the beginning God."  All reality begins with God.  The universe exists--and by this one inconceivable miracle writes the word Creator on the wall of the laboratory, across the face of the skies, and in the heart of man.

What we learn about the Creator from His book of nature is confirmed by His other Book, the Bible.  These two books agree, because they have the same Author, and they both declare, "In the beginning God."

----------------
Difficult or obscure words:
Genesis 1:28. "Replenish"--This word simply means "fill."  It does not connote replacing something that previously existed.
Genesis 2:4. "Generations"--Here this word means "the history or account of their production," or that which God "generated" or "produced."
Genesis 2:11-13.  Geographical names have no significance for identifying present day locations.  The great Flood of chapters 7 and 8 obliterated all landmarks that existed before the Flood.
